It has been a long journey albeit a successful one for
someone who commuted 15 km daily to a government school in T B Dam, a small
place near Hospet. Dr. Murali Mohan Gurram’s life is the stuff that movies are
made of. Dr Murali was born in Bellary, Karnataka, to Mr Rangaiah, Divisional
Engineer for Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board and Mrs Susheela, a
housewife. Mr Rangaiah was the first to be educated in a family of traditional
weavers. There was always an underlying sentiment that there should be a doctor
in the family though Dr Murali gently demurs that his career is entirely based
on his KCET ranking. In fact, he was slotted to join engineering, but the
second round of counseling saw him join medicine in JJM Medical College,
Davangere. Most of his child hood was spent in a small village called
"Hampi-Power-House Camp". Today, he is director of SURALI CLINICS Women and Eye Care and is Consultant Retinal Surgeon at Sri
Mahalaxmi Eye Hospital, Akbar Eye Hospital, etc. with years of experience to his credit. He is also visiting Professor in a Medical College.
Dr Murali became interested in Ophthalmology while studying for MBBS. His
fascination for sketching eyes translated into examining eyes! But it didn’t
stop here. Dr Murali’s passion for serving people and treating eye disorders
spurred him into taking up super specialty in Ophthalmology, Vitreo Retinal
Disorders after MS in Ophthalmology. He trained under the famed Dr Nagpal who
is among the first three retinal surgeons in India. Retinal disorders were
considered untreatable and would automatically lead to blindness as recently as
2-3 decades ago. Dr Murali’s interest in this area continued unabated and he
passed the ICO (International Council of Ophthalmology) Exam with flying
colours. He got a scholarship to train under Dr. Richard in Hamburg, Germany.
Dr. Richard is among the pioneers working on the Retinal Microchip which would
be a boon to blind people, in the future.
Dr Murali holds a DNB (Diplomate in National Board), New Delhi. He also holds
the distinction of being one of the few ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity)
trained ophthalmologists in the twin cities, having been trained by Dr Subhadra
Jalali, whose expertise is recognized nationally and internationally. As ROP is
found in premature babies, it is difficult to detect and results in blindness
within a span of two years. Therefore it requires special training and is not
within the gambit of regular treatment.
Dr Murali was awarded FRCS (Diploma of Fellowship of the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons) Glasgow in 2006, a clear indicator of his acumen. He
also cleared MCh in Ophthalmology, adding another feather to his big cap. His
deep knowledge of his subject is evidenced by the fact that he has presented
several papers in national and international conferences. In fact, a few of his
papers have received gold medals. Dr Murali’s CV makes impressive reading as
there is a string of qualifications attached to his name!
Dr Murali acknowledges that his skills as a doctor and reservoir of
perseverance are often tested when patients are unable to comprehend that
retinal problems don’t show the same degree of improvement as cataract problems
do. He explains that as long as patients get the desired result after
treatment, they are happy. Sometimes, despite patient explanation of prognosis,
the patient is unhappy when the result is not up to his/her expectation.
Dr Murali is married to Dr Sumathi a gynecologist. They together run a Polyclinic "SURALI CLINICS". They have a son Likhith and
a daughter Javali, whom Dr Murali absolutely dotes on. Despite his busy
schedule which starts at 7 am, Dr Murali manages to spend time with his children
in the morning before leaving for work and spends his lunch break with his children.
This description of Dr Murali’s schedule may give the impression that his life
is restricted to work and home but Dr Murali is widely travelled. He has
visited several countries including Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Vatican
City, Belgium, Austria, Holland, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Italy.
His introverted nature may belie his multifaceted personality but Dr Murali is
adept at pencil sketches of nature and landscapes. He has added ball-pen
sketching to his repertoire which he admits is quite difficult. Dr Murali’s
latest hobby, that is, mobile phone photography, not only gives him pleasure
but is of immense value to the medical fraternity. Generally, a heavy
investment of 7-8 lakhs is required for the equipment to take photos of the
eye. Dr Murali had shattered this prohibitive barrier of costs by using the
mobile phone in ophthalmological imaging. This path- breaking effort has been written
about in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr Murali shows keen interest
in macro photography. He clicks images of the eyes of butterflies, flies, etc.
with his mobile phone.
Dr Murali’s quest for knowledge and willingness to explore other avenues
culminated in his learning Photoshop and other related software programs. He
even holds a PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications). His page
“Eye Care-Ask Me” on FaceBook makes him easily accessible to the
general public Furthermore, he has written several articles on eye and eye care
which are published on various internet websites.
A humanitarian, Dr Murali has held many eye camps to reach out to the poor. He
confesses that often he feels sorry for poor patients who borrow large sums of
money to undergo surgeries and are yet unable to regain vision. He hopes for
and works towards a cure for retinal disorders in the future as retinal
disorders are the main cause of blindness. However, there is a ray of hope as
Dr Murali says that earlier 100% of retinal disorders culminated in blindness
whereas now at least 50-60% of them are being treated successfully. With his
hard work, dedication, passion and immense knowledge, Dr Murali is an asset to
any organization that he works for and a beacon of light for those in need of
better sight.
